New dark matter map solving Galactic puzzle?
One of the brilliant things about astrophysics is being able to take pictures of invisible stuff. Infrared telescopes, for example, allow astronomers to see "dark" nebula(picture)clouds of dust and gas that weakly reflect light from nearby stars, glowing mostly in thermal emissions. Similarly, high energy X-rays and gamma rays let the scientists "see" black holes, objects that by definition are so dense not even light can escape their gravitational pull. O.k to be fair we don't see the black hole directly, but rather the radiation infalling material. But still, what we do see is pretty good proof of objects that once existed only in theory. Dark matter is another substance drawn from theory that astrophysics is starting to make visible-although the trick to finding dark matter is a bit more complicated. For starters, dark matter doesn't absorb or emit light, and so far we have no proof of it interacting directly with normal matter. We know dark-matter is there based solely on gravity.Stars more within galaxies and galaxies rotate on their axis in ways that suggest there must be more matter present than what we can see. In addition, clusters of galaxies bend light from objects behind them(an effect known as gravitational lensing) more than they should be based on visible matter present. The galaxy cluster Abell 1689 is among the most powerful gravitational lensing clusters ever observed according to NASA making it a great place to map the distribution of dark matter. Now,a new picture of this lense-failed clustre from the Hubble space telescope has allowed astronomers to create one of the sharpest and most detailed maps yet of dark matter. "the lensed images are like a big puzzle",a team leader Dan coe of NASA's jet population laboratory said in a statement. "Here we have figured out for the first time,a way to arrange the mass of Abell 1689 such that it lense all of these background galaxies to their observed positions" ...to be continued

God didn't create universe says stephen Hawking in his new book"the grand design" and big bang was an inevitable consequences of the laws of physics.Stephen Hawking,a british theoritical physicist, says that i combined the two corner stones of physics, the relativity and the quantum physics, and get the result that there is a law called gravity from which universe can and will create itself. But it should be noted that the same hawking who was trying his best to know the creator of universe in his previous book"a brief history of time" had to cut sorry figure while asking about newton and einstein.

trespassers in kashmir
i have yet to hear a kashmiri muslim describes himself as indian. It was and is to this day that i am a kashmiri.Perhaps among the exceptions are sheikh abdullah, his son farooq, and grandson omer.Right from 1947,whenever india played cricked matches against pakistan, kashmiri muslims supported pakistan. If you donot believe me,read basharat peer's curfewed nights(random house).Do not miss this as a trivial aberration because it does reveal the kashmiri muslims mindset. Now it has been revealed for all to see. They want,us,indians out of the valley. They may or may not throw in their lot with chronically unstable pakistan. But have the leaders demanding azaadi from indian considered the consequences that may follow our getting out of the valley.Every village in the valley has its quota of unmarked graves. How long can this be allowed to go on?Give the valley the azadi it wants and put an end to this sorry state of affairs.By khuswant singh on Hindustan times.
